Chinese Zodiac 2027: Year of the Fire Goat Meaning, Predictions and Forecast for Every Animal

Michelle BellOctober 26, 202611 min read

Chinese New Year 2027 falls on Saturday 6 February, beginning the Year of the Fire Goat, which runs until 25 January 2028. After a year of the Fire Horse, which rewarded speed and nerve, the Goat asks for something quieter: care, craft, and the people closest to you.

When is Chinese New Year 2027?

Saturday 6 February 2027. The Spring Festival runs for fifteen days from that date and closes with the Lantern Festival on Saturday 20 February 2027. The zodiac year itself runs from 6 February 2027 to 25 January 2028, after which the Monkey takes over.

The date moves each year because Chinese New Year follows the lunar calendar rather than the Gregorian one. It always lands on the second new moon after the winter solstice, which is why it can fall anywhere between 21 January and 20 February.

That detail is worth holding onto, because it means Chinese New Year is always a new moon. If you already mark the lunar cycle, this is simply the biggest new moon of the year, and everything in our guide to moon rituals applies to it. Set intentions, name the obstacle, review at the full moon a fortnight later, which in 2027 is the Lantern Festival itself.

What does the Year of the Goat mean?

The Goat, sometimes translated as the Sheep or the Ram, is the eighth animal of the twelve. In the story of the Great Race it is said to have crossed the river on a raft alongside the Monkey and the Rooster, with the three of them working together rather than competing. That cooperative streak is the whole character of the sign.

Goat years are traditionally associated with gentleness, artistry, empathy and home. They are the years for making things, mending things and looking after people. They are not the years for storming the gates. Where the Horse wanted independence and speed, the Goat wants comfort, beauty and a settled nest, and it would rather go around an obstacle than through it.

The shadow side of that is indecision. Goat energy can tip into worrying, people-pleasing and waiting to be chosen rather than choosing. If 2027 has a trap in it, that is where it sits.

What does the Fire element add?

Each animal cycles through the five elements, so a Fire Goat year comes around only once every sixty years. The last one was 1967.

Here is the detail most guides miss. 2027 is a yin fire year, written Ding, where 2026 was a yang fire year, written Bing. The traditional image for yang fire is the sun, or a bonfire: huge, public, impossible to ignore. The image for yin fire is a candle or a lamp flame: small, steady, warm, and the thing you actually read by.

So the two fire years in a row are not the same fire at all. 2026 was the bonfire. 2027 is the candle. The energy does not disappear, it concentrates, and it warms a smaller room properly rather than lighting up a whole field.

Practically, fire on a Goat gives the gentlest animal in the cycle some warmth and some nerve. A Fire Goat year is the version of Goat energy that still makes things happen. Creative work gets finished rather than dreamt about. The kind conversation actually gets had.

How 2027 differs from the Fire Horse year

If you followed the Year of the Fire Horse, you will have noticed how much it rewarded movement. New cities, new jobs, leaving things behind. The Horse does not look back.

The Goat picks up what the Horse left on the floor. Expect 2027 to be the year of consolidating rather than sprinting: the relationship you started in a rush gets properly built, the flat you moved into becomes a home, the creative thing you kept saying you would do gets done because the year finally makes space for it.

If you had a big, loud 2026, 2027 will feel slower, and that is not a loss of momentum. It is the year doing something different.

How to find your Chinese zodiac animal

Your animal is set by your birth year, and the years for each one are listed in the forecasts below.

One important catch. Because the new year moves, anyone born in January or early February needs to check the exact date for their birth year. If you were born before Chinese New Year fell that year, your animal is the previous one. A baby born on 20 January 1991 is a Horse, not a Goat, because the Goat year did not begin until 15 February that year. This catches an enormous number of people out.

The four relationships that decide your year

Before the individual forecasts, it helps to know how they are worked out, because it is not guesswork. Chinese astrology maps fixed relationships between the twelve animals, and your year depends on how your animal sits with the Goat.

  • The clash. Each animal sits directly opposite another. The Goat opposes the Ox, which makes 2027 the Ox's most testing year of the twelve.
  • The harmony pair. The Goat pairs with the Horse, so Horses get an unusually smooth ride straight after their own year.
  • The trine. Three animals form a supportive triangle. The Goat's trine is with the Rabbit and the Pig, which makes those two the clear winners of 2027.
  • The harm. A quieter friction than the clash. The Goat harms the Rat, which tends to show up as people trouble rather than disaster.

And then there is your own year, the ben ming nian, which falls every twelve years and is traditionally considered one of the trickier ones rather than a lap of honour. More on that under the Goat.

Your 2027 forecast, animal by animal

Rat: 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020

A year that asks for patience, which is not your strong suit. The Rat and the Goat sit in a harm relationship, the subtler of the two difficult pairings, and it usually plays out through people rather than events. Expect at least one relationship, probably a work one, to quietly stop working, and expect it to take longer to resolve than you want.

For love: your instinct is to move fast and fix things with a plan. The Goat year will not respond to that. Slow down and let something develop at its own pace, even when it feels like nothing is happening. Second half of the year is considerably easier than the first.

Ox: 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, 2021

The hardest year of the twelve for you, and there is no point pretending otherwise. The Ox sits directly opposite the Goat, which is the full clash. Traditionally this brings disruption to whatever you have built most carefully, and the Ox builds carefully.

The useful reading is not that bad things will happen to you. It is that the Goat year dissolves exactly what the Ox relies on: structure, routine, and knowing where you stand. Things will be less defined than you would like. The Oxen who do well in a Goat year are the ones who stop trying to hold the shape and start asking whether the shape was right.

For love: a year to be flexible in. If you are partnered, the relationship will ask you to adapt rather than to persevere. If you are single, the person who suits you in 2027 is probably not the one who matches the list you wrote.

Tiger: 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022

Neutral on paper, frustrating in practice. The Tiger runs on momentum and conviction, and the Goat year supplies neither. Nothing will go badly wrong, but very little will happen as quickly as you want it to, and you will spend a good part of the year waiting for other people to decide things.

The opportunity is genuine though. Tigers rarely rest, and a slow year is the only circumstance under which you ever do. Use it for the thing you have never had the patience to learn.

For love: your usual approach is intensity, and this is a year that rewards consistency instead. Turning up reliably will get you further than any grand gesture.

Rabbit: 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011, 2023

One of the two best years of the twelve for you. The Rabbit sits in the Goat's trine alongside the Pig, and a trine year is the closest Chinese astrology gets to a tailwind. The things the Goat year favours, home, beauty, peace, creative work, careful relationships, are the things the Rabbit was already good at.

This is the year to make a move you have been putting off because the timing never felt right. The timing is as right as it gets. Property, home, and anything involving making a space your own are especially well placed.

For love: an excellent year, and one where a relationship can move to its next proper stage without being forced. If you are single, you are unusually easy to be around in 2027. Use it.

Dragon: 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, 2024

A mixed year with a lesson buried in it. The Dragon has no formal relationship with the Goat, good or bad, which leaves you free but unsupported. Nothing carries you this year, so whatever you get, you will have built yourself.

The Dragon's usual difficulty in a Goat year is scale. You think in grand terms and 2027 operates in small ones. The win available to you is learning that a modest thing done properly counts, which Dragons find surprisingly hard.

For love: being impressive is not the thing that will work in 2027. Being useful is. The quiet consistent presence beats the spectacular appearance all year.

Snake: 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013, 2025

Quietly one of your better years, with a caveat. The Snake shares a trine with the Ox, and the Ox is having a difficult 2027, so some of that turbulence reaches you second hand, usually through someone close rather than directly.

Otherwise the Goat year suits you well. Snakes work best privately, at their own pace, on something they care about, and 2027 is a year that lets you do exactly that without anybody demanding you explain yourself.

For love: your reserve usually reads as distance. The warmth of a Fire Goat year makes you easier to approach than normal, which is worth knowing if you have been wondering why nothing has happened in a while.

Horse: 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014, 2026

A soft landing, and you have earned it. The Horse and the Goat form the six harmony pair, which means 2027 actively supports you, and it arrives directly after your own year, which is usually the more demanding of the two.

Whatever you set in motion during the Horse year now gets the conditions to settle. This is the consolidation year for everything 2026 started, and the Horses who do best are the ones who resist the urge to immediately start something else.

For love: the strongest year in the twelve for commitment and for settling somewhere. If 2026 brought someone in, 2027 is where it becomes real.

Goat: 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015, 2027

Your year, and tradition is clear that this is more complicated than it sounds. The ben ming nian, the year of your own animal, comes around every twelve years and is considered one of the more testing ones. The usual explanation is that you are standing directly in front of Tai Sui, the god of the year, and being too visible is its own problem.

The custom is to wear red all year, traditionally something given to you by somebody else rather than bought for yourself. Take that as seriously or as lightly as you like. The practical translation is that your own year puts you under a spotlight, and the things you have been avoiding dealing with tend to become impossible to avoid.

The upside is real too. 1967 was the last Fire Goat year, and if you are a Goat, the whole tone of 2027 is set to your own frequency. Creative work in particular goes well. You simply have to make decisions in it, which is the Goat's lifelong difficulty.

For love: the year you stop waiting to be chosen. That is the whole forecast. Everything else follows from it.

Monkey: 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016

A preparation year. The Monkey follows the Goat in the cycle, so 2028 belongs to you, and 2027 is the run-up. Nothing in this year is designed to be the main event, and treating it as one is the mistake available to you.

Use it to get things in order: skills, finances, the relationships you have let drift. The Monkey's cleverness is less useful than usual in a year that values sincerity over wit, and you may find your usual charm does not land the way it normally does. That is not personal, it is the weather.

For love: a year to be straightforward in. Being entertaining has carried you before. In 2027 being honest will do considerably more.

Rooster: 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017

A year that will test your patience with other people. Roosters like things precise, on time and said plainly. The Goat year is indirect, slow to commit and inclined to avoid the difficult conversation, which is close to a personal insult if you are a Rooster.

Your gift in 2027 is being the one person who will actually say the thing. Used carefully that makes you invaluable this year. Used carelessly it makes you the problem.

For love: soften the delivery, keep the substance. The honesty is the thing people value about you, but a Goat year has thinner skin than you are used to.

Dog: 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018

A good, steady year. The Dog has no difficult relationship with the Goat, and the two share a lot temperamentally: loyalty, care for the people close to them, a dislike of unnecessary drama. The Goat year does not ask you to be anything other than what you already are.

The thing to watch is the Dog's habit of carrying other people. In a year that puts relationships and family front and centre, you will be asked for a great deal, and you will say yes to most of it. Decide in advance where the limit is.

For love: a warm year, provided you let somebody look after you for once rather than doing all of the looking after yourself.

Pig: 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019

The other great year of 2027. The Pig completes the Goat's trine with the Rabbit, and of the three you may get the most out of it, because the Goat year rewards precisely what the Pig naturally does: generosity, comfort, good food, good company, and taking pleasure in things without apologising for it.

Expect help to arrive from people rather than from effort. Pigs tend to be well liked and 2027 is the year that converts into something concrete. Say yes to invitations, including the ones that sound like they are going nowhere.

For love: among the best years in the cycle for you. Meeting somebody through friends is especially favoured, which is the Pig's natural route anyway.

Lucky colours, numbers and the red thread

Traditionally the Goat's colours are green, red and purple, and its numbers are two and seven. Red runs through the whole festival anyway: red envelopes, red decorations, and red clothing for anyone in their own zodiac year.

None of this changes your year, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What it does is mark the occasion, and marking occasions is genuinely useful, because a dated boundary makes people more likely to actually start the thing they have been meaning to start. That part is well evidenced. The red jumper is doing the same job as a New Year's resolution, just with better styling.

How to make the most of the Fire Goat year

  1. Finish something rather than starting three things. The Goat year favours completion, and the fire gives you just enough push to get there.
  2. Make your home feel like yours. This is the most on-theme thing you can do all year, and it is not frivolous.
  3. Decide something you have been deferring. Indecision is the Goat's weakness and it will be in the air. Name one thing and settle it in February.
  4. Put the people first. Goat years run on relationships rather than on individual effort. The favour you need in October comes from the dinner you host in March.

For the Western astrology running alongside all of this, our 2027 astrology guide has every major date, and it is worth reading the two together: the Chinese new year on 6 February lands in the middle of a Mercury retrograde and two eclipses, which is a real reason to take the slow start seriously. If you want to mark the day properly, our guide to setting new moon intentions is the method we would use.

Your Chinese zodiac and your star sign together

The two systems are entirely separate and they answer different questions. Your Chinese animal is set by the year you were born and says something about your temperament over a lifetime. Your sun, moon and rising signs come from the day and minute, and work at a much finer grain. Reading them side by side is where it gets interesting, as in our breakdowns of Harry Kane and Jennifer Lopez, where the two systems describe the same person from different angles.

If you are mainly here for compatibility, our ranking of every zodiac pairing covers the Western side in full.

FAQs

When is Chinese New Year 2027?

Saturday 6 February 2027. The festival runs fifteen days and ends with the Lantern Festival on 20 February. The Year of the Fire Goat continues until 25 January 2028.

What animal is 2027 in the Chinese zodiac?

The Goat, also known as the Sheep or the Ram, paired with the Fire element. Written in full it is the Yin Fire Goat, or Ding Wei. The last Fire Goat year was 1967 and the next is 2087.

Which animals have the best year in 2027?

The Rabbit and the Pig, which share the Goat's trine, and the Horse, which forms its harmony pair. The Ox has the most difficult year, because it sits directly opposite the Goat.

Is your own zodiac year lucky?

Traditionally no, which surprises people. Your ben ming nian is considered one of the more testing years of the twelve, and the custom is to wear red throughout, ideally red given to you by someone else.

I was born in January. Which animal am I?

Check the exact date of Chinese New Year in your birth year. If you were born before it, your animal is the previous year's. Anyone born in January or the first half of February needs to check rather than assume.
