2027 Astrology: Every Major Date and What It Means for Your Love Life
2027 holds three Mercury retrogrades, an unusually long Mars retrograde running from January to April, five eclipses including the longest total solar eclipse of the century, and Jupiter changing sign in late July. The front third of the year is slow and the back half opens up considerably.
The shape of the year
If you take one thing from this, take the shape rather than the individual dates.
Where the Magic Actually Happens
Astrology is better in person. Real people, real chemistry, real venues. Find your next night out.
January to early April is heavy going, with Mars retrograde for nearly three months and a Mercury retrograde and two eclipses stacked into February. This is not the year to launch everything on 1 January. Then the middle of the year steadies, and from late July onwards you get a genuinely busy, eventful stretch: Jupiter changing sign, an extraordinary eclipse, and the Lion's Gate, all within a fortnight.
Plan accordingly. Use the first quarter for repair and preparation, and the back half for the things that need momentum behind them.
One practical note before the dates. All of these are given in the Western tropical zodiac, and sources vary by a day either side depending on the time zone used. If you are planning something precisely, check the time as well as the date for your own location.
Mars retrograde: 10 January to 1 April
The longest single event of the year, and the one almost nobody talks about, because Mercury gets all the attention. Mars spends most of it moving back through Virgo and into Leo.
Mars is the planet of drive, action and appetite, and a retrograde is traditionally read as that drive turning inward or stalling. In practice people report a flat, frustrated quality: starting things and not finishing them, energy that will not convert into action, and arguments that circle rather than resolve.
For your love life: this is a poor window for a hard push and a good one for repair. If something in a relationship has needed saying for months, the conversation will go better in February than the ultimatum will. If you are single, expect enthusiasm to come in bursts rather than steadily, and do not read a flat patch as evidence about you.
The three Mercury retrogrades
- 9 February to 3 March, from Pisces back into Aquarius. The messiest of the three, because it overlaps with Mars retrograde and an eclipse. Expect crossed wires about plans and group arrangements.
- 10 June to 4 July, from Cancer back into Gemini. The classic one for hearing from somebody you had stopped expecting to hear from. Family and home arrangements get rearranged.
- 7 to 28 October, from Scorpio back into Libra. The shortest, and the one most likely to bring up an old conversation about a relationship that was never properly finished.
The sensible approach to all three is the same, and our Mercury retrograde survival guide sets it out properly: back things up, read messages twice before sending, and treat the urge to text an ex as information about you rather than as an instruction.
Five eclipses, and one extraordinary one
- 6 February: annular solar eclipse at about 18 degrees Aquarius. Friendship groups, community, the people you have outgrown.
- 20 February: penumbral lunar eclipse at about 2 degrees Virgo. Routine, health and the systems you have been neglecting.
- 18 July: penumbral lunar eclipse at about 26 degrees Capricorn. Work, ambition and what you are building towards.
- 2 August: total solar eclipse at about 10 degrees Leo. The headline event of the year.
- 17 August: lunar eclipse in Aquarius, closing the season and echoing February.
The August eclipse is worth knowing about even if you have no interest in astrology whatsoever. Totality lasts around six minutes and twenty three seconds at its maximum over Egypt, making it the longest total solar eclipse of the twenty first century, with a path running across North Africa and the Middle East. It is not visible as a total eclipse from the UK. It also falls six days before the Lion's Gate, which our Lion's Gate Portal 2027 guide covers in full.
Eclipses in Leo and Aquarius, which is the axis running through most of 2027, tend to be read as a tension between being yourself and belonging to a group. Who you are when you are seen, against who you are expected to be by the people around you. If that sounds like a theme already live in your life, this is the year it comes to a head.
Jupiter: the best news in the year
Jupiter spends the first seven months of 2027 in Leo, finishing the run that began in 2026. It turns direct on 13 April at around 17 degrees Leo, which is the point at which anything that has felt stuck since the winter starts moving again. If you want one date in the first half of the year to plan around, that is the one.
On 26 July Jupiter leaves Leo and enters Virgo, where it stays into 2028. The tone shifts from expansive and romantic to practical and improving. Less grand gesture, more actually sorting things out. Leos get their year back to themselves and Virgos begin theirs.
The slow background
Saturn and Neptune both spend the whole of 2027 in Aries, Uranus is in Gemini, and Pluto is in Aquarius. These do not produce datable events so much as a mood that runs underneath everything else.
Saturn and Neptune together in Aries is an odd pairing: Saturn wants structure and proof, Neptune wants faith and dissolution. The useful reading is that it is a period for working out which of your beliefs about yourself hold up and which were always a story. Uranus in Gemini shakes up how people communicate, which in dating terms means the platforms and the etiquette keep changing under your feet.
The Chinese New Year
6 February 2027 brings the Year of the Fire Goat, following the Fire Horse year. Where the Horse year rewarded speed and boldness, the Goat is traditionally the gentler, more artistic and more domestic of the two, associated with harmony, creativity and taking care of people. Our Chinese zodiac guide explains how the animal years work and how to find yours.
What this means for your love life
Three honest conclusions, rather than twelve flattering paragraphs.
Do not make January the month you fix everything. With Mars retrograde from the tenth, the energy is simply not there, and a resolution made on the first and abandoned by the third week will cost you more in morale than it gains you. Use the winter to decide what you want, and the spring to act on it.
Mid-April is the real starting line. Mars is direct, Jupiter is direct in Leo, and the February pile-up is behind you. If you are going to put yourself back out there, put it there.
August is the month to be seen. A Leo eclipse, the Lion's Gate and the tail of Jupiter in Leo all point the same way. Whatever you have been doing quietly and privately, this is the window to let people know about it.
For a monthly rhythm to carry you through all of it rather than one January burst, our guide to moon rituals gives you a twelve-times-a-year structure, and the manifestation journaling prompts are the version that actually changes behaviour.
