New Moon Intentions: How to Set Them So They Actually Stick

Michelle BellOctober 17, 20267 mins read

A new moon intention is something you decide to start or change, written down at the dark of the moon. The useful part is not the moon itself. It is that the lunar cycle hands you a 29 day review rhythm, twelve times a year, which is short enough that you still remember what you wrote.

Why the new moon, specifically

Let us be straightforward about the mechanism. There is no good evidence that the moon changes your motivation, your hormones or your luck. Claims about lunar effects on human behaviour have been studied for decades and mostly do not survive proper analysis.

What the new moon does give you is a recurring, externally scheduled prompt that you did not have to set yourself. That turns out to matter quite a lot. Behavioural research on fresh starts shows that people are measurably more likely to begin something at a date that feels like a boundary, a Monday, the first of the month, a birthday. January is the loudest example of this, and also the clearest demonstration of its weakness: one annual reset is too far apart to course correct.

Twelve new moons a year is a better cadence than one New Year. If something does not work, you are four weeks from a clean restart rather than eleven months. That is the entire case for doing this, and it is a good one.

So: the moon is a calendar, not a force. Use it as one.

How to actually write them

Most new moon intention lists fail in the same four ways. Here is the version that holds up.

Write three, not ten

Three is the number people can hold in their head for a month. Ten is a wish list, and a wish list is something you read once. If you cannot name your three without looking, you have written too many.

Make each one a behaviour, not an outcome

"Meet someone" is an outcome. You do not control it. "Say yes to two things I would normally decline" is a behaviour, and you entirely control it. Outcomes make you feel powerless by day nine. Behaviours give you something to actually do on a Tuesday.

This is the single biggest difference between intentions that survive and intentions that do not.

Attach each one to something that already happens

New habits fail in the gaps. Tie each intention to an existing anchor: after I make coffee, on the walk back from the station, before I open my laptop. The anchor does the remembering for you.

Write the obstacle down too

Underneath each intention, write the thing most likely to stop it, and what you will do when it turns up. Research on implementation intentions, the if-then format, consistently finds this doubles follow-through. It takes an extra two minutes and it is the step nearly everybody skips.

A simple structure to follow

For each of your three:

  1. The behaviour. What you will do, specifically.
  2. The anchor. When and after what.
  3. The obstacle. What will get in the way.
  4. The if-then. If that happens, I will do this instead.

Then put the page somewhere you will see it. Inside a book you are actually reading, not in a drawer.

At the full moon, roughly two weeks later, read it back. That is your checkpoint. Not a ritual, just a look. At the next new moon, decide what carries over and what gets dropped without guilt.

What the sign of the new moon adds

Each new moon falls in a zodiac sign, and the sign is a useful prompt for what to focus on. Treat it as a theme suggestion rather than an instruction.

  • Aries: starting something you have been circling for months
  • Taurus: money, food, comfort, anything to do with your actual body
  • Gemini: messages you have not sent, things you want to learn
  • Cancer: home, family, rest, your living space
  • Leo: being seen, creative work, putting something out
  • Virgo: routine, health admin, the systems that quietly run your life
  • Libra: relationships, balance, where you are over-giving
  • Scorpio: what you are avoiding, honesty, cutting something off
  • Sagittarius: travel, study, expanding the size of your life
  • Capricorn: work, ambition, long structures
  • Aquarius: friendship, community, breaking a pattern
  • Pisces: rest, creativity, boundaries, letting something go

If the current new moon falls in or near your own sun or rising sign, that cycle tends to feel more personal, which is a good month to set the harder intention. Our new moon calendar has the dates and signs for the year.

Do it in a room with other people

Intentions set alone are easy to quietly abandon. Moon at First Sign runs new moon intention circles in UK cities from January 2027: guided journaling, structured reflection, a short meditation, and notes on what that particular new moon means for your sign. No performance, no sharing out loud unless you want to, and most evenings are alcohol free.

Join the waitlist at Wellness at First Sign to pick your city. If you would rather start on paper tonight, our manifestation journaling prompts are a good place to begin.

FAQs

What should I write for new moon intentions?

Three behaviours you control, each tied to something that already happens in your day, each with the likely obstacle and your response to it written underneath. Avoid outcomes you cannot directly influence.

How long after the new moon can you set intentions?

Any time in the first few days works. The date is a prompt, not a window that closes. Setting them a day or two late is better than waiting four weeks for the next one.

What is the difference between a new moon intention and a goal?

A goal is usually an outcome with a distant deadline. A new moon intention is a behaviour with a 29 day review built in, which is why it tends to survive longer.

Do new moon intentions actually work?

The moon does nothing. The structure does: a short cycle, a written commitment, a scheduled review and a plan for the obstacle. That combination has solid behavioural evidence behind it, whatever you attach it to.
