Astrology is the best icebreaker in the world and most people ruin it in four words. What's your sign has been asked so many times that it now reads as a placeholder rather than a question. Here is how to use the same material properly.
Why Astrology Works as an Opener
It gives two strangers something specific to talk about that is also about them, which is a rare combination. The weather is specific and about nobody. What do you do is about them and desperately dull. Astrology sits in the gap: it is personal, it invites an opinion, and crucially it is fine to disagree about.

Astrology is better in person. Real people, real chemistry, real venues. Find your next night out.
That last part matters more than anything. A good icebreaker needs the other person to have a position. Sceptics are excellent value here, because they will happily explain exactly why it is nonsense and that is a real conversation.
The One Rule
Never ask a question that can be answered with one word. What's your sign gets you Taurus, and then you are both standing there. Every opener below is built to make a one word answer impossible.
The Openers
Guess my sign. The best one, and it is not close. It hands them the floor, it is playful, and whatever they guess tells you exactly how they read you. Ask why afterwards. The answer is always more interesting than the guess.
Which sign would you never date? Instant opinions, usually delivered with feeling, and frequently followed by a story about somebody specific. You will learn more from the story than from the sign.
Do you know your moon sign? A brilliant filter. People who know are properly interested and you have found your conversation. People who do not are curious and you get to explain, which is an easy few minutes and makes you the interesting one.
What sign are you attracted to, and what sign do you actually end up dating? The single most revealing question on this list. Almost nobody gives the same answer twice, and the gap between the two is usually the whole story of their love life.
Do you believe any of it? Direct, disarming, and it works on everyone. Believers explain themselves, sceptics get to be funny about it, and either way you are two minutes into a real conversation rather than an interview.
What Each Element Actually Responds To
Fire, so Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Give them something to have an opinion about, ideally a mild challenge. Fire signs light up when there is something to win. Best of the twelve at what is the worst date you have ever been on.
Earth, so Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Concrete and specific. Abstract questions get short answers. Ask what they are actually good at, or what they would do with a free Saturday, and you get somewhere.
Air, so Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. Hypotheticals. Air signs will happily spend twenty minutes on a question with no answer, and enjoy it enormously. This is the group to ask the strange one.
Water, so Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Ask how something felt rather than what happened. Water signs will go deep faster than anybody at the event, and they are the most likely to remember the conversation a week later.
Do Not Read Anyone Their Own Chart
The one failure mode worth naming. Astrology is a great opener and a terrible monologue. If you find yourself explaining somebody's rising sign to them for four minutes, you have stopped having a conversation and started giving a lecture. Ask, listen, move on.
Also avoid using it as a verdict. Telling somebody you could never date a Gemini while talking to a Gemini is a real thing people do and it never goes well.
