How Long Does Speed Dating Last? What to Expect

Michelle BellSeptember 29, 20264 mins read

Most speed dating events last two to three hours in total. Each individual date is usually three to eight minutes, you will typically meet between ten and twenty people, and the timed portion itself rarely runs longer than about ninety minutes. The rest is arrival, a break, and mingling afterwards.

How Long Is Each Date?

Three to eight minutes is the standard range, with four or five the most common choice. There is a reason organisers land there. Under three minutes and you get names and jobs and nothing else. Over about eight and a conversation that is not working becomes genuinely uncomfortable for both people.

Four minutes sounds brutally short and is usually enough. You are not trying to establish whether you want to marry somebody, only whether you would like twenty more minutes with them at some point.

How Many People Will You Meet?

Ten to twenty is typical, depending on how many people booked and how the room is arranged. Twelve to fifteen is the sweet spot most organisers aim for. Beyond twenty, people start to blur, and by the end you genuinely cannot remember who said what.

Fifteen dates at four minutes each is an hour of talking, plus a minute between each to move. That is where the ninety minute figure for the timed portion comes from.

So Why Is the Whole Evening Three Hours?

Because the timed part is only the middle of it. A normal running order looks roughly like this. Twenty to thirty minutes for arrival, drinks and registration. A welcome from the host. The rotations. Usually a break in the middle. Match cards at the end. And then, at most decent events, an hour or so of free mingling where the format drops away and you can go back to whoever you actually liked.

That last part is worth knowing about, because it is where a lot of the real conversations happen. If you leave the second the timed section ends, you have skipped the best hour.

How Ours Run

Ours are mixers rather than strict speed dating nights, so the timing works a little differently. There is no compulsory rotation, and the difference between the two formats is worth understanding before you book either.

A typical Love at First Sign evening opens at 7pm with doors, registration and a welcome from your host. Icebreakers start around 7:30, with optional cosmic speed dating available through the evening if the room wants it. From about 9pm it is free mingling, and the venue is yours for the rest of the night. Timings are approximate and vary by event.

So the structured part is roughly ninety minutes and the evening is as long as you want it to be. Plenty of people leave at nine. Plenty stay considerably later.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I leave early? Yes, and nobody will make a thing of it. At a strict speed dating night it is politer to wait for a rotation break rather than standing up mid conversation. At a mixer you can simply go.

What if I run out of things to say in four minutes? It happens to everybody and it lasts seconds rather than minutes. Having two or three questions ready removes the problem almost entirely.

How long until I hear about matches? At traditional events, usually within twenty four hours by email. At ours you match on the night through the app, so there is no waiting at all.

Is there a break in the middle? Almost always at a longer event, usually around the halfway point. Use it. Fifteen consecutive introductions with no pause is genuinely tiring.

Should I plan anything afterwards? Leave the evening open. The mingling after the structured part is where most of the good conversations happen, and having a train to catch at nine is a genuine handicap.

Before You Go

If it is your first one, first-time speed dating walks through the whole thing. Questions that actually work solves the four minute problem, and what to wear covers the other question everybody has.
