Dating in LA: An Honest Guide to the Hardest Easy City

Michelle BellSeptember 9, 20267 mins read

Los Angeles has one of the largest populations of single people anywhere in the world and a reputation for being nearly impossible to date in. Both things are true at once, and the reason is more structural than anybody wants to admit. It is not that Angelenos are shallow. It is that the city is built in a way that makes meeting somebody genuinely difficult.

The Problem Is Geography, Not People

LA is not really a city. It is about forty neighbourhoods loosely connected by traffic, and the distance between two of them is measured in minutes rather than miles because the miles tell you nothing. A twelve mile date can be seventy minutes each way at the wrong time of day.

Which turns where do you live into a compatibility question rather than small talk. Westside and Eastside is a real filter, and anybody who tells you otherwise has not tried to sustain something between Santa Monica and Silver Lake on a Wednesday. A cross town relationship in LA has the logistics of long distance without any of the sympathy.

The practical fix is to stop meeting in your neighbourhood or theirs and pick a third one between you. It sounds trivial. It is the single most common reason a promising second date never becomes a third.

Nobody Meets Anybody by Accident

This is the part people who move from New York or London find hardest to adjust to. In a walkable city with public transport, you brush past thousands of people a week. Some fraction of that friction turns into conversation, and some fraction of that turns into something else.

In LA you go from your flat to your car to a car park to a building and back again. You can genuinely pass a fortnight without being in unplanned proximity to a stranger. There is no commute where anything happens, no bar you pass on the walk home, no accidental anything.

That is the actual reason the apps dominate here more than almost anywhere else. Not because Angelenos prefer them. Because the alternative infrastructure does not exist. Which is also why app burnout hits harder in LA. When the apps are your only route rather than one of several, quitting them feels like quitting dating entirely.

The conclusion most people draw from this is that they should try harder on the apps. The more useful conclusion is that in LA every meeting has to be deliberate, so you may as well be deliberate about somewhere better.

Everybody Is From Somewhere Else

This cuts both ways and most dating advice only mentions the good half.

The good half is that people are unusually open. Nobody has a social circle they built at school, so nobody is closed off in the way they are in cities where everyone has known each other since they were nine. If you have just arrived, meeting people in a new city is genuinely easier here than the reputation suggests.

The other half is transience. A meaningful proportion of the people you meet are on a two year plan they have not told you about. Asking how long somebody has been here, and how long they intend to stay, is not a rude question in LA. It is a practical one, and locals ask it early without anybody taking offence.

The Industry Thing

You do not have to work in entertainment for it to affect your dating life, because it sets the rhythm of the whole city. Schedules are chaotic and non negotiable. A shoot can eat three months with almost no notice, and a person who was texting constantly can vanish into a production and reappear in April with a genuine excuse.

The subtler problem is that socialising and networking are the same activity here, which makes warmth ambiguous in a way it is not elsewhere. Somebody being enormously friendly to you at a party is not necessarily interested. They may simply be excellent at their job.

The tell is specificity. Networking warmth is expansive and vague, all we should definitely do something. Interest is specific. It names a day. If somebody has not named a day, you have had a lovely professional interaction.

Everyone Speaks Fluent Therapy

LA has the highest concentration of emotional vocabulary of any dating market on earth. People will tell you their attachment style on a first date, unprompted, and they will usually be right about it.

That is genuinely a good thing. Emotional literacy makes difficult conversations considerably easier, and a city where people have done some work on themselves is a better place to date than one where nobody has.

The failure mode is when the vocabulary becomes a way of avoiding the thing rather than describing it. Holding space, doing the work, not aligned right now. All of it can be sincere and all of it can be an extremely well dressed way of saying no without having to say no. The test is simple: does the language lead to a clearer conversation or a vaguer one? Real emotional literacy makes things more specific. The performance of it makes things fuzzier.

There Is No Cuffing Season Here

In most of the world the weather does a job nobody credits it for. Nights draw in, going out becomes an effort, and people start wanting somebody to stay in with. That is cuffing season, and it is a genuine seasonal forcing function that pushes people from casual towards actual.

LA has no such thing. It is seventy two degrees in January, the patios never close, and there is no point in the year at which the weather makes anybody reconsider being alone. Combined with a culture that treats optionality as a virtue, you get a market where things can stay undefined indefinitely because nothing external ever forces the question.

So you have to supply your own deadline. Not an ultimatum, just an internal one. Decide roughly how long you are prepared to let something stay ambiguous before you ask, and then actually ask when you get there. In a city with no seasons, you are the only pressure available.

Astrology Is Not Weird Here

Ask somebody their rising sign in most cities and you get a raised eyebrow. Ask in Los Angeles and you get an answer, usually a precise one, frequently with a birth time attached. LA is the most astrologically fluent city in America and it is not close. If you do not know the difference between your sun, moon and rising sign, you will be at a mild social disadvantage within a fortnight of arriving.

Whether you believe any of it is beside the point. It functions here as a shared language for talking about personality, which is a genuinely useful thing to have in a city full of strangers from elsewhere. If you want to hold your own, your Venus sign is the one that actually describes how you behave in relationships, and the pairings ranked covers who tends to work with whom.

What Actually Works

Pick a radius and mean it. Decide how far you will genuinely travel on a Tuesday, not how far you would travel for somebody perfect. Then date inside it. Everybody overestimates this and everybody regrets it around week five.

Make the first one short and local. An hour somewhere between you beats dinner across town. Low logistics means low stakes, and low stakes means people actually turn up.

Treat vagueness as an answer. In a city this good at pleasant non commitment, enthusiasm without a date in it is a no. That is not cynicism, it is time saved.

Go where being single is the point. Since nothing in LA happens by accident, the deliberate options are the only real ones. Something where everybody in the room is single and knows it removes both hard parts at once, which are working out who is available and finding a reason to speak to them. Our Los Angeles events page is where ours will appear.

We Are Bringing This to LA

Love at First Sign runs astrology-led singles nights across nineteen UK cities, and New York was our first city in the United States. Los Angeles is next, and given how fluent this city already is in the language, it is arguably the most natural fit we have.

We will be at Blind Barber in Los Angeles this year. Dates are being confirmed, so head to our Los Angeles events page to see what is coming up. Rooms are age-banded, gender balance is capped rather than sold first come first served, and there is always a host running the evening.

In the meantime the Cosmic Fusion app works anywhere, and it reads your Western sign alongside your Chinese element and animal rather than stopping at sun signs like everything else. And if you want evidence rather than promises, our reviews and success stories include couples who met at our events, went exclusive, and in one case got engaged.
